Why are there scratch marks in the Epoxy coating? (Epoxy Comets)

What is it?

This is an issue known as “Epoxy Comets”, typically identified by comet like scratches, as if a comet landed and travelled across the surface.

Epoxy Comets

Common Causes:

Mixing – Mixing guidelines should be followed to ensure that all pigment that may have settled is fully dispersed throughout the entire mix, failure to do so can cause pigment to settle on the surface causing comets.

Lack of preparationA lack of preparation can cause debris/dirt to be left behind. Epoxy coatings rely on good preparation to achieve a perfect finish, our recommendations are in place to help prevent coatings from failing. We would recommend grinding the surface, or using Etch'n'Clean where this isn’t possible, as well as thoroughly vacuuming the area.

Contamination from debris/dirt - This can be a variety of things ranging from loose dirt/dust from the room, from an open window, insects and even pet hair, always ensure the room is thoroughly cleaned, trying to keep any windows/doors shut to reduce the risk of contamination. Any sort of debris will cause the product to flow around it, creating a comet effect.

So, how would I resolve this?

  • It is recommended to first sand the surface with a fine/medium grit sandpaper, only removing the affected coating where possible.
  • The area should then be cleaned to remove any and all debris.
  • A re-coat should then be applied to the area to create a nice, uniform finish, free of any defects.
