This project was carried out in December 2020 during a factory shutdown. We assisted the contractor with a 800m² installation of our High Build Anti-Slip Epoxy floor coating at a large unit at Glasgow Prestwick Airport. We've helped lots of companies within the aerospace industry with large flooring projects and have years of combined experience within this field. Floor coatings are generally used for heavy machinery and equipment, therefore must be highly durable and able to withstand foot & vehicle traffic. It is also critical they are easy to clean and possess non-slip properties; our technical team are able to advise from specification right through to application for any flooring project within this industry.
What Was The Brief?
The client:
Prodecor had been selected as a recommended contractor who were carrying out the work on behalf of Precision Tooling at the Spirit Aero Systems site. Spirit Aero Systems required an on-site facility in order to achieve quick turn-around on the machining of various components used in the fabrication of the Airbus 350 aircraft wing structure, manufactured at their Prestwick facility. The floor coating had to be incredibly durable and long lasting, whilst also been able to withstand heavy machinery & vehicle traffic.
Brief Overview:
Area Size – 800m2
Durability Required – High Durable
Product – 2 Part High Build Anti Slip Epoxy Resin + Oil Tolerant Primer
How Did We Help?
After initially discussing the brief with our technical advisers, Mark from our technical team visited the site to closely inspect the current condition of the floor. Large areas of the floor were oil contaminated, as well as the existing coating heavily peeling and flaking. The floor was carefully inspected to ensure the correct equipment was recommended. The client had instructed contractor Prodecor to carry out the work, with whom Mark worked closely throughout the entire project, from the initial site visit through to completion.
An oil tolerant primer was recommended along with 2 coats of our High Build Anti-Slip coating. Mark recommended a heavy grind preparation in order to smooth the surface and create a key for the epoxy to adhere to. The contractor was able to source the recommended equipment based on Marks recommendations, whilst we were able to deliver the products to site quickly in readiness for work to commence.
The external contractors had a wealth of experience preparing the floor. Taking instruction from Mark, the floor was Diamond ground to clean, dry concrete ensuring a smooth area whilst also creating a key for the epoxy to adhere to. The installation was then carried out using 1 coat of Resincoat Oil Tolerant Primer followed by 2 coats of Resincoat High Build Anti-Slip Floor Paint. Throughout each stage of the process Mark assisted the contractor virtually via facetime answering any questions they had, ensuring a high quality finish was achieved.
What Was The Finished Result?
The project was completed during the Christmas break, reducing as much impact on daily operations as possible. The contractor who we worked closely with, along with the client, were exceptionally pleased with the finished result. See comments below from Steve Robertson MD of Prodecor:

How We Can Help Aerospace & Engineering Clients:
At Resincoat we proudly manufacture all our epoxy & polyurethane coatings in the UK to the highest standard. We have combined experience of 35 years + working with clients in a range of industries and a wealth of experience in the Aerospace & engineering sector providing clients with attractive, high quality epoxy resin floors. We are certified to ISO9001 standards providing high quality products & services to our clients.
An epoxy based resin floor is ideal for these environments due to its high-strength formula. The floor is able to withstand heavy vehicle & foot traffic. As well as being resistant enough to bear the weight of a steady stream of traffic, the smooth and seamless surface created by epoxy coating is more forgiving than other types of flooring on the machinery that travels over it. This means less wear and tear for transport machinery, which results in lower maintenance costs for the business.
